Procrastination

Fortunately, there are many possible ways for you to tackle this problem. Here are some starters:

  • Break your goals down into smaller "chunks" that are specific and achievable. Make sure you know exactly what results you want and why you want to achieve them. Write the goals and smaller goals down in a journal of your progress, and check it on a regular basis.
  • Give yourself small rewards for achieving each smaller goal, and have a large reward for reaching your final goal. You can be even more effective if you give each small goal a time frame.
  • Think about and write in your journal, all the negative consequences of not achieving your goals - what opportunities you are missing, how disappointed you feel, what other people will think etc. Also list all the positive reasons for change, make sure there are plenty of them, and remind yourself of them often.
  • Make some visible reminders for yourself, that you are pursuing a goal. These can be overt, like text messages to yourself, or more subtle, such as a pictorial screensaver on your computer, or tiny stickers that others wouldn't notice. Do this especially where doubt or boredom are likely to strike.
  • Get support. Enlist the aid of a "buddy" as well as your friends and family. The more public you make your commitment the more it will stick. You and your buddy can help each other achieve your goals.
  • Adjust your strategies as you go. Notice what helps you succeed and what trips you up. Ask your buddy for suggestions and support.
  • Celebrate your successes and give yourself credit for the changes and achievements you make. Use the knowledge you have gained and recorded in this success to help you tackle future challenges.

Finally, remember that the more you want to reach your goal, the more often you remind yourself of your purpose, and take action, the more likely you are to succeed. Good Luck!
